This page is slightly differnent to the others here we list some of the medication your doctor may give you for Depression, the dosage and possible side effects. Please note that no one gets all the side effects, the same tablet can have oppisite effects in different people for example the same tablet can make one person drowsy and sleep better but give another person insomnia. Usually side effects calm down or completely vanish in a few days. If a sideeffect persists or you are worried about a side effect see in the first instance your pharmasist then if nessesary your doctor. Always read the leaflet that accompanies the tablet as this will give a list of side effects and the few rare ones where you need to stop taking the tablet.

Antidepressants

 

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (ssri's)

These are the commonest Antidepressants Presciribed at the current time and the most modern Antdepressents

Side Effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrheea, constipation, abdominal pain, weight loss or gain, anorexia, rash, dry mouuth, anxiety, headache, insomnia, dizziness, drowsiness, .


Citalopram (Celexa, Cipramil , Sipralexa , Seropram)

Dosage Citalopram is safe and well-tolerated in the dose range of 20 to 60 mg/day.

Citalopram can have a number of adverse effects. fatigue, drowsiness, dry mouth, increased sweating , trembling, headache, dizziness, sleep disturbances, cardiac arrythmia, blood pressure, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea


Fluoxetine ( Prozac)

 

Common Side Effects:- Feeling or being sick, indigestion, tummy ache, diarrhoea, constipation, loss of appetite and weight loss, dry mouth, nervousness, anxiety (worry), headache, insomnia (difficulty sleeping), shakiness, dizziness, weakness, problems passing water, seeing things that aren't real, drowsiness, discharge from the nipples, sexual problems, sweating, movements of the body without control from the patient, violent behaviour, thinning of the hair or joint pain.



 

Other Antidepressants

These are older antidepressents or those given where ssri's (above cannot be tolerated, or are not woking. Or where prehaps a doctor or specialist feels you are more suited to these

Venlafaxine (Efexor)

 

Dosage typically 75 to 225 mg per day, but higher dosages up to 450 mg are sometimes used for the treatment of severe or treatment-resistant depression

Common Side Effects:- Nausea, Ongoing Irritable Bowel Syndrome ,Dizziness, Fatigue, Insomnia, Vertigo, Dry mouth, Sexual dysfunction, Sweating, Vivid dreams, Increased blood pressure, Weight gain, Decreased Appetite
